Images are in honor of my mother. Like her sisters and my grandmother, my mother not only loved artichokes, but made a wonderful version stuffed with thin slices of romano cheese, garlic and bread. Back in those days, artichokes were in season only briefly once a year here, but it was a gloriously delicious short season.

Kingdom of Grey: A Sunny Day for Ice

Rochester, as a City in the Kingdom of Grey, asserts itself each November and we rarely escape its fury of cold, ice and snow until April.   February of 2015 was the coldest month on average that any one of us has “enjoyed. There’s no doubt that Global Warming continues, but this month was proof that today’s weather and Climate Change aren’t always on the same page.  The scientist in me knows that Regression to the Mean rules the trend.  That doesn’t make those weeks when a glacier returned to my driveway and eventually entombed my car any less of a hassle.  On the one day where ice could melt, my auto sank up to the rims. Even twenty pounds of cat litter still did not help.  There was barely anywhere to go, anyway.  Meanwhile, at mid-month, the house next to the park across the street started asking for a portrait of its frozen stress. So I complied.

Trionfo Violetto

The Perfect Pole Bean. At least in my opinion, but let me list the ways. First, the whole plant is beautiful, but I say that about many vegetables. Seriously though, blossoms, foliage & vines and the beans themselves are among the prettiest things in the garden. Second, at my latitude in Rochester, New York, these are also prolific across the summer well into the fall and easy to grow. But again, these are pole beans, they must be given vertical space. Which means they grow well in big containers if kept well watered. Next, they are tasty, stringless and remain quite edible even when big. Finally: Trionfo Violetto is a heritage bean and one of the easiest from which to harvest seed. Just leave a few pods on the vine and come back when they are dry, Keep the seed or even whole pods in a paper sack. The seeds will keep for several years. In fact, I haven’t bought seed for this bean in about 20 years. It is perfect.
